SEND welcome video transcript

Hello my name is Mrs Gould and I'm the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator at Ryburn.

I’m sure that many of you, and your parents, will be feeling a little anxious about starting secondary school in September but I want to reassure you that we are here to support you and help you to settle in in any way we can.

At Ryburn, we pride ourselves on being an inclusive school and believe that all our students should be supported to achieve the very best they can - everyone matters and every dream counts! We have a large team of additional needs specialists and higher level teaching assistants who support students both in the classroom and through interventions. This will probably be very similar to how things worked at your primary school although some things may be a little different.

We target our support around the four key areas of communication and interaction, cognition and learning, social and emotional mental health and physical and sensory needs. There are many different interventions going on - including literacy or numeracy, curriculum support, SULP, fine motor skills, physiotherapy and nurture amongst others. If needed, you may also have a named key worker to check in with you and support your wellbeing in school.

I’m really looking forward to getting to know each other and helping you on your new learning journey.  We want you to do well here at Ryburn and we use a graduated approach of assess, plan, do and review to ensure students progress in line with the high expectations we have for them.

Things have been very different for all of us this year but whether we are back to normal or not, we’ll make sure that there’s always someone around to help. For the first two weeks each form will have an ambassador to guide you round school and make sure you get where you need to be. All our new SEN students will be sent a special transition booklet with some activities so you can get to know the school and your new routines before you even get here!

Hopefully, by the time you start in September, you'll feel like you already know us!
