Summer School Success

Ryburn was pleased to welcome new year 7 students over the summer for a fantastically fun week of creative and performance activities, based on the recommended Summer reading.

The new starters were tasked with reading “The Boy Who Made Everyone Laugh”. The story centres around a young boy who dreams of becoming a stand-up comedian, but suffers from a stammer that affects his confidence. The book focuses on themes of bravery and celebrating individuality - something we strongly encourage here at Ryburn.

The students were, quite literally, able to make a song and dance out of the experience. Popular song lyrics were adapted to match the messages of the book and the students were able to learn harmonies, as well as try their hands at percussion and ukulele accompaniment. We might even have some new recruits for the school choir and band. Each group of students were also taught choreography to reflect the story and had the opportunity to express themselves and show off their moves!

Now onto drama. The students had the opportunity to put their creative writing skills to the test and develop scenes that would become themed performances; centred both around the book and scenarios they may face during their time at Ryburn - The first day of school, making new friends, how to support one another, and showing off their individual talents.

The students got to create their very own top hats out of cardboard. These were decorated with imagery and symbols of their very own superpowers - the wonderful and unique things that make them who they are.

Finally, all of the students' hard work came together in a final performance on Friday afternoon. It was a wonderful way to end a fabulous week.

Any new experience can be incredibly intimidating, but the students did brilliantly in showing bravery and enthusiasm over the week. They got to meet one another, form new friendships, experience the school before term started, and most importantly, be themselves. A great confidence boost as they approached their first day at high school. And of course, they were supported in all of their activities by some of our amazing staff who will now be teaching, and encouraging them, in the new term.
