September/October Newsletter

And we’re back.

We’ve finished our first half-term and what a welcome back it has been. We’ve hit the ground running with activity days, our Ryburn Sixth students certainly know how to put the FUN into fundraising, and we held our wonderful open evening for Year 6 students and their parents.

Keep reading for all the latest goings on in the Ryburn community.

open evening 2022: a place to grow, create and thrive

We got to open our doors and let Year 6 students and their parents explore our fabulous school during our 2022 Open Evening.

The presentation began with the above video being shown in the theatre. We had many brave students hosting and presenting to a large audience, not just once, but four times throughout the night. There were performances from our amazingly talented dance students and we had musicians playing and signing as our guests got seated. Our theme for the evening was ‘growth’. This was represented in the opening video and through our students in different year groups explaining how they have all thrived since coming to Ryburn.

It really is the people who make the school. That was demonstrated all throughout the night in every department. We had over 300 students volunteer to give tours and answer questions about the different subjects. Let’s also not forget the enriching staff who presented the school at its best and showed parents and students that Ryburn is truly a place that helps students create and nurture their own futures.

Thank you to everyone who attended. We hope you had a lovely time. Good luck with your applications and we look forward to seeing you next September.

Celebrating SPort

Our sports teams our back in full swing and we already have lots to celebrate.

Our U16 Netball team have claimed the title of Netball Champions for Calderdale Schools. Their last match was a rerun of last year’s final with NHGS gunning for revenge. However, our team were more composed than ever, showing experience and maturity which ultimately led them to another victory against NHGS and another championship title. Well done girls!

We have a new Year 7 Rugby League Team and not only have they already qualified for the Yorkshire Cup, but they did so as the top team in Calderdale. They drew in their game with Trinity but dominated in both of their games against Calder and Brooksbank, winning 24 - 0 and 20 - 0. A fantastic achievement for the team we can’t wait to see what they will achieve in the Yorkshire Cup.

Restart a heart day

Our school welcomed Yorkshire Ambulance Service for Restart a Heart Day. They delivered very important sessions to students on providing CPR. This is an essential skill that will stay with them and could save a person’s life in the future. The students too understood the importance of the session and really took in all of the information. Thank you to our guests from Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

World Mental Health day

This month also saw World Mental Health Day. Students were given cards with words of affirmation as they came into school. A lovely way to start the day. Students sold cakes to raise funds for a mental health charity. Finally, everyone listened very respectfully to our guest speaker who spoke about their own struggles with mental health. We’re very proud of our students for the care and maturity they’ve shown towards the topic.

National Coming out Day

Our Ryburn Sixth members of our LGBTQ+ Society took a visit to Hebden town hall for ‘Out in the Valley’. Here they spoke about their own experiences in coming out for National Coming Out Day.

We are so incredibly proud of our student leaders and how they are an inspiration to not only students, but also the wider community.

A very wicked wednesday

Continuing on with Ryburn Sixth successes, we held our annual Wicked Wednesday event. This year students wanted to raise money for Ukrainian refugees. We had some absolutely fantastic costumes, brilliant effort by both staff and students. All together students raised a fantastic £181.

Happydays foodbank

Happydays is a UK-based charity assisting vulnerable individuals at risk of homelessness. They provided us with a donations bin for students to bring in donations to be taken to the food bank. We are so proud of our students’ thoughtfulness as they have completely filled the bin with essential items requested by the charity. The donations will be taken to The Gathering Place in Halifax, which provides necessary resources and services to those who need them most.

Activity day

At the start of the term, we held activity days for Year 9 and 10 students who unfortunately were not able to go on the camping trip when they were in Year 7. Students took part in lots of fun activities such as archery, caving, climbing and team building. Thank you to the instructors from CI Adventures for giving the students a wonderful experience.

Return of the reading leaders

Our reading leaders are back! Every Tuesday some of our Year 10 and 11 students volunteer their time to meet with Year 7 students to read a book of their choice. We love to see our students engaging throughout the year groups and helping each other. Maybe our current Year 7 students will become reading leaders when they reach Year 10 and 11 too.
